Photography Business Help.

A common problem in the photography field since the introduction of the affordable DSLR is the availability of a photographer.  They are everywhere now if you take a moment to look around.  Millions of people starting photography businesses from their own homes.  This article isn’t about the quality of work in the field so much as the availability of a photographer and the effect this has on someone first starting out with their business.  We want clients, we want work and so we try to keep our pricing “fair” to grab attention.

Not to say everyone does this, some people have natural confidence from their skills or maybe even business training.  There are plenty though unsure of the market and how far skill and actual product will bait a person in a tough economy.

Truth is though these “fair” prices aren’t fair to you at all.  You end up working long hours, wear on expensive equipment; you’re stressed for deadlines and you’re ignoring relationships.  Looking at your income makes you sick and bills are piling up.

Your car starts to die faster than you can pay to repair it because between overhead cost and living expenses you’re drowning with your price list that reads: Image CD FREE.  Prints are compiled only with packages instead of pressed as a separate item.  When you’re customizing your pricing to fit your client’s budget with less concern for your own.  (This isn’t to say you don’t make enough to get the job done but your home costs money, the food you eat costs money and updating equipment costs money.  Insurances policies and back ups, web service fee’s, the list goes on.

You can’t do it on your own.  Pick up some books, find your formula.  Figure out what you need to make every month to survive.  There is help, you just have to look for it.  There are plenty of people who have been there and are willing to offer their advice, blog about it weekly and help guide you around their past pitfalls.

If you’re having trouble with your business, if you’re starting to feel like you’re drowning then visit Psychology for Photographers.  Whether you want a portrait business or to set up a successful store for your Fine Art prints you will find the help here.

This is the start to many paths of help, take this first step and see how many paths you can wander down to success. If you have the artistic talent, the technical photography know how with a belly fire of passion for what you do but find your wallet not mirroring your skill and efforts, this is the place to start.

Enjoy your journey, good luck.  Stay seeded for more help as I will keep sharing what I stumble upon and find useful.  Thank you for tuning in.

More Cupcakes!

Sorry about the photo, it is not from my DSLR but my iphone. DSRL cupcake photo's coming later.

It has been a busy end to the week!  So much for those to-do lists huh?  It always happens like this, I’m not good at following plans, I’m deviant like that.

I haven’t been wasting time in my blogging absence though.  Further research, photo taking, and baking / cooking for foodography practice.  I adore food but I love photographing it and making you want it more than I enjoy eating it sometimes.

You’re probably wondering by now,

“How do I get my hands on some of those cupcakes?”

please, help me.  I can’t afford to keep making cupcakes at the rate I am, but the addiction to photographing them is too strong.  If you see a cupcake you want, BUY IT.  All cupcakes photographed and baked by me are for sale via request.

The cupcakes are valid for sale the day of being made (if the photo shoot is accomplished early enough) but always the day after.  Two day’s after their baking time is the last day they are available for sale.

The baking date will be published with each photo though normally it’s the same day the photo is posted.  (Unless done very late at night then the post is auto made in the morning).

Cost:

Large cupcake $1.00

Mini cupcakes .50 cents ea.

Delivery available in my surrounding areas, just request and I will let you know if it is too far.
Pick up optional.

I have boxes that fit up to FOUR large cupcakes.  You can squeeze a variety of large and small into them.  About 6-9 mini cupcakes in a box.

If you want custom orders and I don’t have the time to accomodate you or the portfolio need (as I’m not a baker I’m a photographer but people do love my baked goods) I can refer you to a list of professional bakers in the area that would be happy to accomodate you.  I am not going into business as a baker, I am a photographer but I love photographing food, building my portfolio and cooking / baking.  I however can’t keep supporting this fun if I don’t start making cost back.

So please, if you’re interested have a try at one of my delicious creations!  Thank you, stay tuned for more news later.

Good Morning on Day 2.

Good Morning!  Usually things kick off pretty early in the MSP office (which is more like a broom closet, Harry Potter would be cramped).  This mornings sunrise was beautiful, though the weather was too cold and damp for me to sit outside capturing it.  I decided to still post a sunrise photo though, above is a lake in Brighton.  Depicted as the morning sun rises casting beautiful and exotic colors through the sky.

Though the photo above depicts a summer sunrise the season is spring and things are waking from their wintery slumber.  Now is the time colors are born into the dreary atmosphere that becomes Michigan through the shortening winter months.  If the air weren’t so often threatening of illness were I to expose myself to it at those vulnerable and visually magical hours I would have many images to share with you.  I am currently working on the perfected layer outfit for ease of movement for obtaining my shot + keeping warmth in the nippy spring morning air.

I woke up this morning to Tokyo news and when I got into the office and logged into my photography news I was drawn to a blog based out of Tokyo.  My day seems to be themed already!  I browsed a delightful blog entry posted this morning entitled “Let the Ohanami begin!”  I encourage all of you to give it a look over, it wont take up much of your time.

As the day warms up I hope to take some photo’s which I will share with you here later.  There are cupcakes waiting to be photographed, knowledge to be obtained, appointments to be made, and much more, including the possible redesign of the MSP website.  I also want to explore deviations in my foodography designs.  Stay tuned to find out what I learn.
